Chef Marvin Woods — award-winning chef, author, and founder of Coastal Soul Kitchen

My Story

Food is more than what’s on the plate. It’s memory, migration, culture, survival, celebration, and identity. For more than 25 years, I’ve built my career around understanding the deeper story behind the food we eat and the people who shaped it.

I’m a classically trained chef, television host, author, restaurateur, and culinary storyteller whose work connects food, history, wellness, and culture through the lens of Coastal Soul. My cooking is rooted in the traditions of the African diaspora and influenced by the Low Country, West Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, and the coastlines that continue to shape cuisines around the world.

I started cooking with a simple philosophy: learn the craft, respect the ingredients, and understand the story behind the food. That mindset has taken me from restaurant kitchens and luxury hospitality to television, private dining, speaking engagements, and national wellness initiatives. Along the way, I’ve worked as an Executive Chef, hospitality consultant, educator, and storyteller, always focused on building real flavor with purpose and integrity.

At the center of everything I do is the philosophy of Coastal Soul. To me, Coastal Soul is the intersection of food, culture, geography, and history. It’s the understanding that ingredients, techniques, and traditions traveled across oceans long before they appeared in modern restaurants or grocery stores. It’s recognizing how the African diaspora shaped foodways throughout the American South, the Caribbean, Latin America, and beyond.

This isn’t trend-driven cooking. It’s rooted cooking. Food with lineage. Food with intention.

Throughout my career, I’ve also spent years working in wellness and health-conscious culinary spaces. That experience changed the way I think about flavor. Too often, food relies on excessive sodium, sugar, and processed shortcuts instead of technique, balance, aromatics, spice layering, smoke, citrus, and real ingredients. My goal has never been to create “diet food.” My goal is to create food that feels soulful, satisfying, flavorful, and connected while encouraging people to continuously cook better and live whole.

My work has included television appearances, cookbook publishing, hospitality leadership, culinary education, and partnerships with national health and wellness organizations. I’ve had the honor of cooking at the James Beard House, serving as a Lead Chef Partner for Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative, and working across restaurants, resorts, universities, private dining, and media platforms throughout my career.

Today, my work lives across multiple platforms through the Coastal Soul Kitchen ecosystem, including cookbooks, spice blends, recipe development, media projects, storytelling series like Receipts and Stirred: Food Has Memory, hospitality consulting, and educational content centered around food, culture, and wellness.

Everything connects back to one belief: food carries memory. And when we understand the story behind what we eat, we connect more deeply to ourselves, our communities, and the cultures that shaped the table.

Cook better. Eat with purpose. Live whole.

Marvin Woods.
